(Given at the quarterly memorial ceremony in Ocala, Florida, January 9, 2010) in honor of deceased military veterans.
A PRAYER FOR AMERICA’S HEROES
Our Heavenly Father, we have gathered once again, and have paid honor to our military veterans, our Nation’s heroes; many of them kids, 18, 19, 20 years of age when they first put on the uniform.
We have honored heroes, who toted artillery pieces and mortars on their backs, and their dead and wounded in their arms.
Heroes, who felt the earth shaking under them from heavy bombs, who endured the thunder of grenades and artillery, and sometimes the frightening sound of silence.
Heroes, who carried their memories: stationery, pencils, and pictures of their loved ones; and often Dear John letters, worn from jungle crawling, and blurred by sweat, and tears.
Heroes, who put their lives at risk for one another, but disguised that love with macho remarks like, “Don’t mean nothing!”
Heroes, who crawled into tunnels, ran onto beaches under withering fire, flew fighters and bombers in skies lit up from ground fire; and braved raging seas, often roiled by the blood and debris of battle.
Heroes, who fought off Kamikaze attacks, who lived in metal tubes, in the dark oceans and under the ice pacts.
Heroes, who were afraid of dying, but more afraid of showing that fear.
We have honored them again, Dear Father, in this beautiful and peaceful setting. It is the least we could do. We bless their memories, and pray that your richest blessings will be upon their families and loved ones.
And do bless us, Dear Lord, and help us all to be a blessing; in your holy name we pray, Amen.
